Registering A New Boat In Illinois
Submittal of an application does not mean a guaranteed approval of an application. We review each transaction on a case by case basis.

Brand New Watercraft – Class 1 (EXCEPT jet skis/PWCs) - purchased from an Illinois dealer or retailer
- Completed Online Watercraft Application – check the NEW box
- Original Manufacturer’s Statement of Origin
- Electronic Payment for registration fees (see fee chart)
- No tax return required
Brand New Watercraft – Class 1 (jet skis/PWCs), Class 2, 3, 4 - purchased from an Illinois dealer or retailer
- Completed Online Watercraft Application – check the NEW box
- Original Manufacturer’s Statement of Origin
- Electronic Payment for registration fees (see fee chart)
- If purchased from a dealer/retailer, submit an ST-556 tax form and bill of sale
- *Rut-75 tax form filed electronically, or a check or money order payable to Dept of Revenue for tax amount due
New Watercraft – ALL Watercraft Class Types purchased from an OUT-OF-STATE DEALER/RETAILER
- Completed Online Watercraft Application – check the NEW box
- Original Manufacturer’s Statement of Origin
- Electronic Payment for registration fees (see fee chart)
- RUT-25 tax form (Tax Requirement on Watercraft).
- Copy of Bill of Sale or Purchase Agreement
- Check or money order payable to Deptartment of Revenue for tax amount due if filing the RUT-25 by paper.
Used Watercraft - currently issued an out-of-state registration number - Class 1 (EXCEPT jet skis/PWCs) - acquired from an individual
- Completed Online Watercraft Application – check NEW box
- Original out-of-state title (if titled) or registration card (if non-titling state)
- Electronic Payment for registration fees (see fee chart)
- No tax return required
Used Watercraft - currently issued an out-of-state registration number - Class 1 (jet skis/PWCs), Class 2, 3, 4 - acquired from an individual

- Original out-of-state title (if titled) or registration card (if non-titling state)

- *RUT-75 tax form (Tax Requirement on Watercraft).
- Copies of Bill of Sale or Purchase Agreement
- Check or money order payable to Deptartment of Revenue for tax amount due if filing the RUT-75 by paper.
* Form RUT-75 can be filed electronically using MyTax Illinois. The following is required:
- An individual must enter first and last name, social security number (SSN), and the Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) from the prior year IL-1040, Individual Income Tax Return. A business must enter the business name and federal identification number (FEIN). The information entered must match with IDOR's records to proceed with this filing method.
- Copies of the purchase agreement or invoice, FAA bill of sale (aircraft), bill of sale (watercraft), proof of tax paid, and other documentation, if applicable.
- Electronic payment (in full) from a checking or savings account. This requires entry of the bank account type, account number, and routing number.
After filing Form RUT-75 electronically, allow one business day for processing before applying for your aircraft or watercraft registration.
Note: Filing electronically is the preferred method as it can reduce processing time. Payment requests submitted in MyTax Illinois may take three to five business days to process.
