Illinois Wildlife Action Plan
State Wildlife Action Plans are designed to guide conservation efforts for Native Species and their habitats. These Plans are periodically reviewed, revised, and updated to reflect changes in conditions and new information that impact these species. Illinois’ first Wildlife Action Plan was completed in 2005, was comprehensively revised in 2015, updated with a minor revision in 2022, and comprehensively revised again in 2026.

Our Vision for Illinois is a landscape that supports resilient populations of native wildlife and plants along with human endeavors.
To make this vision a reality, our conservation approach is directed at three major goals to work towards over the next twenty years. These are
- increasing the extent and quality of shared lands
- maintaining native wildlife and plant species and
- increasing public connection and appreciation to native species and their habitats.
Shared lands are considered areas managed to support both Native Species and human endeavors. Within the plan, sections focused on the Illinois Landscape, Native Species, Natural Community based Campaigns, and Conservation Opportunity Areas provide Conservation Action Strategies that outline the work required to meet our conservation goals and approach our Vision for Illinois.
