Description

This nature preserve is located in what was once the largest grove of timber in Lee County in the early 1800s (14,000 acres). Eolian sand dunes, combined with glacial outwash deposits and wetland basins that formed at the base of the Bloomington Moraine, made this landscape uniquely suited to the growth of trees. But, this grove, being surrounded by a seemingly endless expanse of open prairie was also a relatively "open" landscape consisting of widely scattered fire tolerant oaks, dry sand prairies, and ephemeral wetlands. Today, relict natural communities of this former timbered grove remain at the Amboy Marsh Wildlife Sanctuary Nature Preserve. This preserve is open to the public and located approximately 2.4 miles southeast of the town of Amboy, Illinois. 1701 Mormon Road, Amboy, Illinois.
