At nearly 1,000-acres, this nature preserve represents the “core area” of a much larger functionally restored prairie ecosystem that is managed by The Nature Conservancy and its volunteers. This larger area currently encompasses more than 3,500 acres of restored prairies, oak savannas, woodlands, and wetlands. Together, these lands represent one of the largest prairie landscapes in Illinois. A free roaming bison herd was re-introduced at this preserve in 2014. The preserve is not open to the public, but offers a public viewing area and interpretive displays.
