Description
Heeren Prairie Nature Preserve is a dry dolomite prairie identified on the Illinois Natural Areas Inventory (INAI #0089). While relatively small, the site survives today as an outstanding high-quality natural area representing the original dry prairie vegetation of the Rock River Hill Country Natural Division. The highest quality prairie shows little to no evidence of disturbance and includes a full complement of prairie plants typically found in these rather harsh, dry, conditions, including little bluestem, prairie dropseed, porcupine grass, side oats gramma, big bluestem, Indian grass, prairie brome, prairie smoke, pasque flower, leadplant, butterfly weed, and rough blazing star.
