Location And Access

Pine Rock is located approximately 4 miles east of Oregon on IL Rt 64, primarily on the south side of the highway, between Rt 64 and Pine Rock Rd. Preserve entrance is on the south side of Rt 64 near the east edge of the preserve.

Description

This unique and diverse preserve includes dry upland black oak forest/savanna in the northern one-third of the tract on bluffs that rise sixty feet above the low flat plain to the south. Pine Rock itself is an outcropping of St. Peter sandstone rising 40 or so feet above the high bluffs. The flat plain across the southern two-thirds of the preserve in mostly mesic and wet-mesic prairie dominated, for the most part, by big bluestem grass and various sedges. The preserve is located in the Oregon Section of the Rock River Hill Country Natural Division. It is managed as a nature preserve as well as an education and research site by the faculty and students of Northern Illinois University. Area is on two topo maps Oregon and Daysville
