Location And Access

The site is northeast of Lyndon in the central part of Whiteside County.

Description

Lyndon Prairie Nature Preserve consists of wet-mesic prairie, mesic prairie, and dry-mesic prairie of the Mississippi River Section of the Upper Mississippi River and Illinois River Bottomlands Natural Division. The scattered prairie remnants occur along an abandoned railroad right-of-way. The Illinois Natural Areas Inventory recognizes the site as a mixture of Grades A, B, and C prairie. The wet-mesic prairie is characterized by cord grass and big bluestem; the dry-mesic prairie by big bluestem, little bluestem, and porcupine grass; and the mesic prairie by big bluestem, cord grass, and Indian grass.
