The site is on Sugar River, 5 miles northwest of Shirland. It is open to the public for hiking.
Description
Sugar River Alder Nature Preserve represents a complete cross section of natural communities from the Sugar River east to the nearby sandy uplands. Wet and wet-mesic floodplain forest, sedge meadow, dry-mesic sand savanna, dry-mesic upland forest, dry dolomite prairie, and pond of the Winnebago Drift Section of the Northeastern Morainal Natural Division are found on site. These natural communities provide a wide variety of habitat for animal and plant species, including state-listed plants, reptiles, and numerous Illinois Wildlife Action Plan Species in Greatest Need of Conservation. The area is part of the Illinois Natural Areas Inventory listed as the Sugar River Natural Area site (INAI #1466).
