Description

Glenview Naval Air Station Prairie Nature Preserve encompasses the Glenview Naval Air Station Prairie Illinois Natural Areas Inventory site (INAI # 1496) which consists of mesic and wet-mesic prairie, wet prairie, and fresh-water marsh. The mesic and wet-mesic prairies are arrayed along very subtle elevational, moisture, and soil gradients and frequently transition from one community to other along these gradients. In wet prairies, standing water is present on the surface during the winter and spring and the soil is nearly always saturated. Consequently, plant species diversity is lower than other prairie communities. The freshwater marsh community is restricted to two wetland basins. Characteristic species include water smartweed, great bulrush, narrow-leaved cattail), and common water plantain.
