Kennicott’s Grove Nature Preserve is located within the boundary of The Grove National Historic Landmark (‘The Grove’). The Grove recognizes and honors the Kennicott family, and especially the noted naturalist Robert Kennicott, by maintaining historically significant archives, buildings, including the Kennicott family home, and through the educational facilities and programs administered by the Glenview Park District. The outstanding natural features of Kennicott’s Grove Nature Preserve are Grade C mesic upland forest and Grade C ponds recognized on the Illinois Natural Areas Inventory (INAI # 1469). The mesic upland forest have ideal moisture conditions and exhibit a dense overstory with shade-tolerant species in the understory. The ponds are embedded within the mesic upland forest in natural depressions. Plants associated with the ponds include common water plantain, a variety of sedges, ten species of rushes, three species of Polygonum spp., arrowheads, and cattails. A total of 285 native plant species had been recorded on the site, including two state-threatened species.
