The site is one of the five prairies located in southern Cook County that are collectively referred to as the Indian Boundary Prairies. It is within the Chicago Lake Plain Section of the Northeastern Morainal Natural Division. There is currently no public access.

Description

Markham Prairie – East Nature Preserve contains surviving remnants of the vast prairie that once extended along Lake Michigan in the Lake Plain Section of old Lake Chicago. The site represents the wetter end of a moisture gradient of dune and swale topography that extends through the Indian Boundary Prairies. Natural communities identified by the Illinois Natural Areas Inventory are high-quality mesic prairie and sedge meadow. Mesic prairie are ranked G2 or “imperiled globally’ by The Nature Conservancy.
