Description
McMahon Woods and Fen Nature Preserve protects and provides ongoing stewardship for the unique natural communities and rare species that occur on site, including a federally endangered species. A graminoid fen, sedge meadow, and marsh complex occur where groundwater is discharged across a shallow ridge. Common plants include marsh marigold, tussock sedge, jewelweed, and swamp aster. There is a small basin marsh dominated by river bulrush, as well as a larger degraded wetland. A complex of reconstructed prairie and savanna, ranging from dry-mesic on sandy ridges to wet-mesic where groundwater is near the surface, is found on the preserve. There is also degraded floodplain forest in the area around Crooked Creek. A tributary of Crooked Creek winds through a fine dry-mesic to mesic savanna, woodland, and forest complex. Dominant canopy trees include white oak, red oak, black oak, and shagbark hickory. A few depressional wetlands occur within the woods. Several cultural areas exist where the original natural community has been destroyed. These areas provide buffer for the Nature Preserve.
