Location And Access

The site is in Bremen Township within the city limits of Markham. It is one of five Nature Preserves in south Cook County collectively known as the Indian Boundary Prairies. Other sites included in the Indian Boundary Prairies include Gensburg-Markham Prairie Nature Preserve, Paintbrush Prairie Nature Preserve, Markham Prairie East Nature Preserve, and Dropseed Prairie Nature Preserve, all of which are dedicated sites representative of the Chicago Lake Plain Section of the Northeastern Morainal Natural Division of Illinois. Description

Sundrop Prairie Nature Preserve is an integral part of the Indian Boundary Prairies due to its relatively large size and the number of prairie flora and fauna recorded. It is included on the Illinois Natural Areas Inventory for its remnant wet to mesic prairie, sand prairie, and sedge meadow natural communities. The site is a subtle blending of many different prairie elements. Areas within the site reflect typical calcareous black soil loam, while other areas support more acid tolerant plants typical of sandy soils. Collectively, over 238 plant species have been identified on site. In addition, this site is large enough to attract area-sensitive grassland bird species.
