Description
Thorton-Lansing Road Nature Preserve and adjacent Jurgenson Woods Nature Preserve represent some of the last remnants of the natural vegetation of the southern part of the Chicago Lake Plain. Sandy depressions in this preserve support a marsh and bog-like community not found in nearby Jurgenson Woods Nature Preserve. The most common woodland community at this preserve is the sandy flatwoods dominated by pin oak. Like Jurgenson Woods, a number of interesting and unique species well adapted for these sandy, poorly drained soils still persist.
