Location And Access

The site is in the northeast corner of Milton Township within the Morainal Section of the Northeastern Morainal Natural Division. It is located along the north side of St. Charles Road immediately to the east of I-355 and west of Swift Road. The towns of Glen Ellyn and Lombard are in proximity. The site is within the Churchill Woods Forest Preserve, which has several footpaths leading to the banks of the East Branch DuPage River. The main entrance is on the south side of St. Charles Road. 

Description

Churchill Prairie Nature Preserve is comprised of mesic and dry mesic upland forest, savanna, sedge meadow, wet prairie, and mesic prairie within the drainage way of a small intermittent stream which flows into the East Branch of the DuPage River. The wet prairie, sedge meadow, portion of the prairie lies in a smaller drainage way while uplands to the north and south provide for the dryer prairie and dry mesic forest. The natural communities allow for a considerable diversity of both plants and animals. Over 400 native plants and 113 species of animals have been documented. These include 15 fish, 3 amphibians, 6 reptiles, 70 birds, and 19 mammals. The site is recognized on the Illinois Natural Areas Inventory (INAI # 0524) for the presence of endangered and threatened species.
