Des Plaines Riverway Nature Preserve is comprised of wet and wet-mesic bottomland forest, marsh, shrub and tallgrass meadows, vernal ponds, and a creek. The bottomland (floodplain) woods represent the finest example in DuPage County. The woods are unique in that there are many large, mature trees that typically aren’t found in other floodplain woods in DuPage County. Black ash, swamp white oak, slippery elm, silver maple, and black gum are common. The preserve hosts 292 native plant species, including populations of state threatened and endangered species. Numerous Illinois Species in Greatest Need of Conservation and regionally rare species of amphibians, birds, and native plants have also been found.
