Location And Access

The site is in the Village of Addison, approximately 0.5 miles west of I-355 and 0.5 miles south of Illinois Rt. 20, within the Morainal Section of the Northeastern Morainal Natural Division. It is also a part of Swift Prairie Forest Preserve. It can be accessed off Walter Drive, north of Army Trail Road between Glen Ellyn and Swift roads. It does not have a parking lot or trails.

Description

Swift Prairie Nature Preserve is a diverse site situated near the headwaters of the East Branch of the DuPage River. It is a mosaic of natural communities comprised of marshes, wet prairie, meadow, re-created prairie, immature upland forest, ponds, and a creek. A portion of the site is recognized by the Illinois Natural Areas Inventory (Swift Road Meadow INAI #1391). There have been 359 native plant species documented. Some of the most conservative flora on site are found in the pockets of sedge meadow, such as a state-threatened species. The site also supports 83 vertebrate wildlife species, which includes a state-endangered species, a state-threatened species, Illinois Species in Greatest Need of Conservation, and regionally rare species.
