These knolls represent the northwestern terminus of the Kaneville Esker, a geological feature identified on the INAI. Over 125 native plant species comprise the prairie communities. Dominating the prairie knolls are several grass species including little bluestem, side oats gramma, porcupine grass, and prairie dropseed. Characteristic dry gravel prairie species that occur here include fringed puccoon, lead plant, silky aster, prairie violet, and common whitlow grass.
