Description
Almon Underwood Prairie Nature Preserve consists of Grade B dry gravel prairie and old field communities identified on the Illinois Natural Areas Inventory (INAI #1412). The best feature is the approximately 2 acres of high-quality dry gravel prairie situated on three small knolls. These knolls represent the northwestern terminus of the Kaneville Esker, a geological feature identified on the INAI. Over 125 native plant species comprise the prairie communities. Dominating the prairie knolls are several grass species including little bluestem, side oats gramma, porcupine grass, and prairie dropseed. Characteristic dry gravel prairie species that occur here include fringed puccoon, lead plant, silky aster, prairie violet, and common whitlow grass.
