Description

Freeman Kame Nature Preserve consist of a mosaic of sedge meadow and dry-mesic savanna arrayed upon rugged glacial topography. The site was initially recognized by the Illinois Natural Areas Inventory (INAI #1474) for extant high-quality sedge meadow and oak woodland (later described as dry-mesic savanna) communities and for the presence of a state-threatened species. It represents a rare example of the natural vegetation that once occupied the rugged glacial outwash topography of northeastern Illinois. Freeman Kame has a high diversity of amphibians and reptiles, with 18 species documented at the site. The cattail marsh hosts a diverse assemblage of wetland birds.
