Location And Access

The preserve is located within the Morainal Section of the Northeastern Morainal Natural Division of Illinois in southwest Lake County that makes up part of the 2,835.1-acre Lakewood Forest Preserve. It is east of and partially within the corporate limits of Wauconda in Fremont Township, (Township 44 North – Range 10 East) in portions of Sections 19 & 30. Public access is provided via the Millennium Trail which meanders through the preserve from the northeast corner at Bonner Rd south to IL Route 176 and includes two trail connections from neighboring communities to the west. The main parking entrance is located on the south side of IL Route 176, west of Fairfield Road.

Description

Broberg Marsh Nature Preserve increases the amount of State protected land within Lakewood Forest Preserve from 600 acres to 962 acres. The site is recognized on the Illinois Natural Areas Inventory as part of the Wauconda Bog (INAI Site # 1002). Broberg Marsh Nature Preserve is listed on the INAI as a Category I, II, and III site. It includes a mosaic of Grade B/C freshwater marsh and community reconstructions of savanna, wetland, and prairie. Broberg Marsh and associated wetlands are known to support a large assemblage of native wetland birds, one of the largest in Lake County. Previous investigations have even led researchers to comment that Broberg Marsh is one of the highest quality wetland bird habitats in Northeastern Illinois.
