From jct. Hwys. 21 & 60,(3 miles south of Libertyville) take Hwy. 60 east 1 mile to St. Mary's Road, then turn and go south 1.2 miles. The nature preserve is west of the road. Special Note: Lloyd's Woods is a privately owned nature preserve. Entrance is by permission only.
Description
Lloyd's Woods represents the woodlands that once covered the eastern edge of the Des Plaines River valley. Although logged and lightly grazed in the past, the forest still retains good natural quality. Most of the preserve is mesic upland forest comprised of sugar maple and basswood. The smaller floodplain forest contains silver maple, green ash and willows. The unusual flatwoods community has suffered from the invasion of Dutch elm disease. Swamp white oak and green ash are common here. The herbaceous understory is rich in wildflowers, including large stands of giant trillium, long-beaked sedge, cancer root, ostrich fern and running strawberry bush. The vertebrate wildlife includes chipmunk, deer, raccoon, veery and red-tailed hawks.
