Location And Access
Lyons Prairie and Woods is located in extreme northeast Lake County in the city of Waukegan. It is bounded by Blanchard Road on the south, North Avenue on the east, a wide Commonwealth Edison utility easement on the north, and an unpaved trail on the west. Access is gained from a parking lot at the corner of Blanchard Road and Sheridan Road.
Description
Lyons Prairie and Woods Nature Preserve is part of the Lyons Woods Forest Preserve. The nature preserve contains mesic, wet-mesic and wet prairie, upland dry-mesic forest, and dry-mesic savanna natural communities, typical of the Morainal Section of the Northeastern Morainal Natural Division, and a successional old field community. More than 150 species of vascular plants have been recorded at the site.
