Location And Access
The site is located within the Morainal Section of the Northeastern Morainal Natural Division of Illinois in south-central Lake County. It is near the corporate limits of the Village of Vernon Hills and the Village of Lincolnshire, located in Sections 10, 11, 14, & 15 of Vernon Township. Public access is provided to Wright Woods Nature Preserve at five locations. The main parking entrance is located at West Everett Road and St. Mary’s Road, with a smaller neighborhood trail connection located at the far northeast boundary from West Everett Road. Additional parking and access is located on Illinois Route 21, north of Old Half Day Road at Half Day Forest Preserve which includes extensive trails connecting to Wright Woods Nature Preserve. The Des Plaines River Trail is a 31.4-mile multi-use trail which winds through 12 preserves including the west end of Wright Woods Nature Preserve creating connections from both the south and the north. There are 4.24 miles of hiking/biking trails which loop through Wright Woods Nature Preserve and connect to other adjacent preserves and trail systems.
Description
Wright Woods Nature Preserve includes high-quality Grade B mesic upland forest and northern, Grade C dry-mesic forest, Grade C floodplain forest, and a small cultural community being restored to forest. Notably, the 67.5 acres of northern flatwoods located within the nature preserve represent a 44% increase in the amount of this forested community Statewide. The site provides suitable nesting habitat for five bird species, two amphibian species, and three insects that have been identified in the Plan as “Species in Greatest Need of Conservation”. Two State-listed plant species have been reported from Wright Woods Nature Preserve.
