Location And Access

Guiding Star Savanna Nature Preserve is in southeastern Kankakee County, in unincorporated Pembroke Township, approximately one mile west of the town of Hopkins Park. It lies within the Kankakee Sand Area Section of the Grand Prairie Natural Division of Illinois and can be found in Section 29 of Pembroke Township (Township 30 North, Range 11 West).

Description

This preserve includes a portion of the Guiding Star Savanna INAI site; the significant feature within the boundaries of the nature preserve is the Grade B dry sand savanna, which is found on the south and west-facing slopes of the sand dunes; the north and east-facing slopes of dunes are Grade C in quality due to less exposure to the sun, resulting in dense tree growth. Most of the remaining acreage is Grade C sand prairie, which was once old agricultural field. This is one of many high-quality sand savannas in Pembroke Township that is permanently preserved in the Illinois Nature Preserves system.
