From Smithfield take Highway 95 west 2.5 miles and stop at the Spoon River. The preserve is on the north. It is not open to the public.
Description
This woods is an old growth forest remnant representative of the Galesburg Section of the Western Forest-Prairie Division. Two types of forest communities are present here: dry mesic and wet-mesic upland forest. This site had been protected by the previous owner for over 50 years. In the dry-mesic forest, white oak, black oak and red oak are the most common trees. Silver maple, basswood and hackberry are the most common trees in the wet-mesic forest.
