Location And Access

Section 34, T32N R2W 3PM, Hennepin Township, along the Illinois River bluffs about 1 mile west of state route 26. Access is from a foot path that begins south of the boat ramp parking area at the Sue and Wes Dixon Waterfowl Refuge.

Description

The preserve is a 26-acre seep and seep-related wetland community. The site contains the largest identified seep area in the Illinois River Section of the Upper Mississippi River and Illinois River Bottomlands Natural Division. It is located within the 3,000-acre Sue and Wes Dixon Waterfowl Refuge. The seep benefits from extensive restoration efforts in 2001 that restored adjacent Hennepin and Hopper Lakes. These lakes were drained and farmed for several decades before restoration began. Now, the site supports a mosaic of lakes, marshes, seeps, savannas, and prairies.
