Location And Access

The preserve is in northwestern Monroe County, approximately two and a half miles north of Valmeyer; five miles south of Columbia; and 4 miles west of Waterloo. The site is part of the St. Louis Metropolitan Region, with more than 2.8 million residents. The site is adjacent to the historic Miles Cemetery. There is an access road that follows the existing gravel and dirt road which runs along the southern section of the cemetery property, to the mausoleum, and then across the mowed lawn to the prairie. The Site is open from dawn to dusk.

Description

Eagle Cliff Prairie Nature Preserve and Nature Preserve Buffer is a 1-acre site comprised of 0.83 acres of Grade A loess hill prairie and an approximately 0.25-acre access road. There is a small section of Grade A cliff associated with the hill prairie. The preserve includes more than half of the main Grade A loess hill prairie in the Miles Prairie Illinois Natural Areas Inventory site (#202) located in the Northern Section of the Ozark Natural Division. Besides protecting the loess hill prairie and limestone cliff natural communities and a state-listed species, Eagle Cliff Prairie Nature Preserve supports several campaigns identified in the IWAP, including the Farmland and Prairies Campaign, the Invasive Species Campaign, and the Land & Water Stewardship Campaign.
