Location And Access

Proceed east on a county road from the Village of Chauncey approximately 3.5 miles. The preserve lies on the north side of the road.

Description

Chauncey Marsh represents 155 acres of outstanding marsh, prairie, bottomland forest and riverine communities of the Bottomland Section of the Wabash Border Natural Division. The preserve is only a small portion of the surrounding 920 acre natural area. Chauncey Marsh is a permanent marsh surrounded by remnants of mesic prairie. As the river retreated, the oxbows left behind turned into permanent marshes. Chauncey Marsh is dominated by cordgrass and bulrush. Presently, the water level of the marsh is being affected by a nearby artificial drainage canal. If further drainage improvements are ever made, the complete loss of the marsh is possible.
