Location

The site is located 2 miles east of Keensburg in southeastern Wabash County near the Illinois-Indiana border. It is within Beall Woods State Park adjacent to Beall Woods Nature Preserve and along the Wabash River.

Description

Beall Woods Land and Water Reserve is included within the Beall Woods Illinois Natural Areas Inventory Site (INAI #0940). It is contiguous with Beall Woods Nature Preserve which was designated as the “Forest of the Wabash” in the National Natural Landmark program. The reserve consists of 13 acres of Grade B dry-mesic upland forest and 20 acres of Grade B wet-mesic floodplain forest. The canopy of the upland forest is occupied by white oak, black oak, red oak, chinquapin oak, tulip tree, shagbark hickory, and ash. The floodplain forest is dominated by mature sycamore, silver maple, box elder, ash, hackberry, and cottonwood. Coffee Creek, a low gradient perennial stream, flows in an easterly direction throughout the central part of the reserve.
