Description

Three distinct natural communities exist within the Belleau Woods Land and Water Reserve; mesic woodland dominates with a small shrub meadow and an intermittent stream. The site represents a fine example of mesic upland woodland. This woodland supports three species of area-sensitive forest birds that have been confirmed as breeding. Eighteen species of woodland birds have been confirmed breeding as well. Numerous Illinois Species in Greatest Need of conservation and regionally rare species of birds, mammals, and native plants have also been found here. Plant surveys have identified 309 native plant species.
