County

Woodford

Location

The site is located northeast of Peoria within Black Partridge Park.

Description

Black Partridge Park Woods Land and Water Reserve consists of rolling and complex topography with steep ravines and deep, highly incised waterways. The natural character is mostly mature second growth, dry-mesic and mesic forest with characteristic ground flora and understory shrubs and trees. White oak is the dominant canopy tree in the dry-mesic forest, while the mesic forest is dominated by red oak, sugar maple, and American basswood. The forest community supports a breeding bird community containing 17 area-sensitive bird species. Seeps occur in several areas at the base and sides of the ravine system. The seep communities exhibit a unique microclimate within the forest and support a floral assemblage characteristic of wetter environments. The headwaters of a tributary of Partridge Creek flow through the reserve area, which significantly adds to the habitat diversity and ecological importance of the site.
