Location

The site is in Cass County within Panther Creek Township. It is located on the very steep slopes overlooking the intersection of the Sangamon River valley and Panther Creek.

Description

Chandlerville Cemetery Hill Prairie is included within the Chandlerville-Snyder Hill Prairie Illinois Natural Areas Inventory (INAI #1535) site. The reserve contains 0.5 acres of Grade A, 0.4 aces of Grade B, and 0.6 acres of Grace C loess hill prairie. High quality loess hill prairie is an exceedingly rare natural community type in Illinois. Prairies at the reserve are characterized by a high diversity of drought-tolerant species, especially little bluestem grass and side-oats grama. There is also adjacent woodlands located along the bluff sides near the junction of Panther Creek and the Sangamon River valley. The Illinois Natural Areas Inventory identified 0.4 acres of the early successional woodlands as Grade C.

The site is open to the public from sunrise to sunset during cemetery hours. Entry is from the Chandlerville Cemetery access road at the top of the bluff.
