Location

The site is 4 miles east of the Village of Chauncey and 10 miles northeast of Sumner in proximity to Chauncey Marsh Nature Preserve.

Description

Chauncey Marsh Land and Water Reserve is included on the Chauncey Marsh Illinois Natural Area Inventory (INAI #0038) site. Wet, wet-mesic, and mesic floodplain forests occupy most of the site. The Embarras River, a large, low gradient stream, meanders through portions. Shrub, swamp, and ponds are scattered throughout the floodplain forests and near the Embarras River. The center of these communities are flooded for most of the year. The site also contains warm season grass and tree plantings, a constructed wetland, and old fields that provide buffer to Chauncey Marsh Nature Preserve. The site supports 184 animals and 351 plant species, including state threatened and endangered species and Species of Greatest Need of Conservation as identified by the Illinois Wildlife Action Plan.
