Location

The site is a satellite of Ferne Clyffe State Park located approximately 1.5 miles east of Mt. Pleasant and 3 miles southwest of Buncombe.

Description

Cypress Pond Land and Water Reserve is a large compact pure stand of cypress-tupelo contained in a depressional pond identified by the Illinois Natural Areas Inventory (Cypress Pond INAI #0062). The area is highly significant in that it is one of the two largest cypress-tupelo stands in the state. In addition, it is the northernmost cypress-tupelo pond of its size found so far away from the Mississippi and Ohio River. The swamp community is categorized as Grade B and the wet floodplain forest Grade C and D.

Access

The site is open to the public. To access the reserve, proceed 4.2 miles east from I-57 on State Road 146 and turn north on Mt. Pleasant Road (2500E), and then travel 1.6 miles and turn right (east) on Cook Lane (900N), proceed 0.75 miles to where the road curves south and use the field lane straight ahead (due east) to access an IDNR parking lot. An informational kiosk located just east to the large yellow gate gives site regulations and provides a map showing the site and access trail.
