Location

The site is located 22.5 miles northeast of Galesburg. The nearest town is Victoria which is approximately 3 miles to the west on IL 167 at the intersection of IL Rt. 167 and IL Rt. 180.

Description

Forever Fields Land and Water Reserve consists of managed grassland (Grade D), impoundments (Grade D), and mesic savanna (Grade D). The large area of continuous treeless grassland provides a large area of suitable habitat for seven Species in Greatest Need for Conservation as well as three species listed as endangered in the Illinois Endangered and Threatened species list. A portion of the grasslands have been planted to native prairie and are being managed with prescribed fire and treatment for invasive species. Amidst the grassland are 78 wetland/pond complexes, as well as savanna along the east side of the property. Most of the savanna complex is a monoculture of eastern cottonwoods with reed canary grass as the dominant herbaceous plant.

The site is open to the public with landowner permission. There are parking lots available on the north and south sides of the reserve.
