Location

The reserve is in the southwestern part of Jo Daviess County, about one mile southwest of the Town of Hanover, on the south side of Hanover Road. It is part of a large complex of protected lands owned by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, The Nature Conservancy, The Prairie Enthusiasts, and Jo Daviess Conservation Foundation.

Description

The Hanover Forest encompasses the north central portion of the Hanover Bluff Illinois Natural Areas Inventory Site (INAI #1058). The reserve consists primarily of dry-mesic and mesic upland forest (30 acres) bisected by wide utility power lines and former cropland/successional fields (4.64 acres). The dry-mesic and mesic upland forest communities are found on well drained thin soils over bedrock dominated by red oak, black oak, pin oak, shagbark hickory, black walnut, eastern cottonwood, and basswood. Principal understory shrubs are prickly ash and hazelnut. The natural communities provide valuable habitat to a variety of plants and animals.
