Location

The site is about 5 miles south of Mascoutah boarded on the east by the Kaskaskia River.

Description

Jackson Slough Woods Land and Water Reserve contains Grade A and B wet to wet-mesic floodplain forest and Grace C young to mature second growth floodplain forest on the Illinois Natural Areas Inventory (Jackson Slough Woods INAI #0242). The wet to wet-mesic forest are characterized by sycamore, silver maple, green ash, pin oak, bur oak, swamp white oak, shellbark hickory, and pecan. Several sycamore and silver maples are 36 to 48 inches in diameter. Vines of trumpet creeper, greenbrier, and moodseed are common. Understory shrubs include buttonbush, deciduous holly, and elderberry, and common herbaceous species include stinging nettle, false nettle, touch-me-nots, and asters. The young to mature floodplain forest has a high tree density with an abundance of ash species.
