Location

The reserve is in the northwest Cook County within the Upper DesPlaines River watershed in Palatine Township. It is found within Jens Jensen Forest Preserve which lies east of Quentin Road. It is bounded by Lake-Cook Road to the north, Hicks Road to the east, and Illinois Route 68 to the south.

Description

The rolling topography and mix of woodlands, prairie, and wetland basins that characterize Jens Jensen Grasslands and Woods is emblematic of the Morainal Section of the Northeastern Morainal Natural Division of Illinois. The site consists of Grade B and Grade C mesic woodlands, Grade C freshwater marsh, Grade C sedge meadow, and a cultural community being restored to prairie. Collectively, these natural communities and one cultural community support 398 native plant species, including a state-threatened species. Twenty-five species of birds considered Species in Greatest Need of Conservation have been reported using the site during the spring/fall migration period or breeding season.

Access

The site is open to the public. Vehicular access is from Illinois Route 68. Parking is located south of the site. Pedestrian access is provided from Camp Reinberg, a camping facility located just east of Quentin Road.
