County

Jo Daviess

Location

The site is in the western part of Jo Daviess County, about 2.5 miles southwest of Galena. The upland portion is situated above the backwaters of the Mississippi River known as Keough Slough. An active railroad corridor of the Illinois Central and Burlington - Sant Fe railroads dissect the property along its south border.

Description

Keough Effigy Mounds Land and Water Reserve protects significant Native American archaeological features known as the Reynick Mound Group, including the only know intact bear effigy mound within Illinois. The reserve ensures the long-term preservation of the artifacts and cultural resources. There are four natural communities within the site: dolomite cliff, dry-mesic savanna, mesic upland forest, and riparian wetland/open water. The riparian wetland/open water community is part of the Mississippi River Backwaters Illinois Natural Areas Inventory site (INAI #606). A botanical inventory of the reserve around the time of dedication yielded 129 species.
