Location

The site is within the Heron Creek Forest Preserve owned and managed by the Lake County Forest Preserve District near Long Grove.

Description

Killdeer Creek and Woodland Land and Water Reserve is a mosaic of Grade C dry-mesic upland forest, Grade C mesic floodplain forest, Grade D dry-mesic forest, Grade D sedge meadow, an “old field” community dominated by shrubs, and restored prairie arrayed along elevational and soil gradients associated with Killdeer Creek. The most significant feature is the 16 acres of mature dry-mesic upland forest that borders the Reed-Turner Woodland Nature Preserve. This area is a relic of a woodland that once extended along Indian Creek and Killdeer Creek prior to European-American settlement.
