Location

The site is located within the Village of Plainfield in northern Will County, just west of I-55. It lies within the Grand Prairie Section of the Grand Prairie Natural Division near the border of the Northeastern Morainal Natural Division.

Description

Lake Renwick East Land and Water Reserve consists of a former agricultural field that has been planted with prairie vegetation. It consists mainly of low to moderate quality restored prairie vegetation with an abundance of warm-season and cool-season grasses with native forbs interspersed. It is managed for grassland bird species such as the dickcissel and sedge wren. There are also elements of sedge meadow and marsh communities throughout the reserve. One of the main functions of the site is the long-term viability of the Lake Renwick rookery located on the nearby Lake Renwick Heron Rookery Nature Preserve. This site provides additional foraging habitat to sustain the several hundreds of birds which use the rockery. The protection of existing foraging habitat and the creation of new foraging habitats in the immediate vicinity of the rookery benefits the birds by allowing them to save energy by staying closer to their nest while foraging for food.
