Description

Little Vermilion River Land and Water Reserve protects and buffers the Little Vermilion River, a biologically significant stream recognized by the Illinois Natural Areas Inventory (INAI #1140) for its high-quality river system and endangered species habitat. The site consists of several disconnected tracts composed of bottomland and upland forests, fields and young restoration areas, ravines, riparian corridors, and segments of the Little Vermilion River. Dry-mesic and mesic upland forest occur on slopes, while bottomland forest occurs in portions of the floodplain. Protecting these forests reduces erosion and sedimentation entering the Little Vermilion River. The site additionally provides habitat for forest-interior birds and numerous Species in Greatest Conservation Need as identified by the Illinois Wildlife Action Plan and is within the Vermilion River and Little Vermilion River Conservation Opportunity Area identified by the Illinois Comprehensive Wildlife Action Plan.
