Location

The site is in the City of Monticello in Piatt County. It is about 3 miles northeast of Robert Allerton Park, 1 mile north of the Upper Sangamon River Land and Water Reserve, and 2 miles southwest of Lodge Park County Forest Preserve.

Description

Monticello’s Sangamon River Land and Water Reserve protects an approximately 0.7-mile segment of the Sangamon River. This river is recognized by the Illinois Natural Areas Inventory as a biologically significant stream (INAI #1449) with outstanding aquatic resources. Monticello’s Sangamon River protects forest that contributes to the high natural quality by reducing runoff and sediments entering the river. The forested corridor essentially functions as a buffer for the river. The forest community is made up of second growth floodplain and upland forest. The predominant vegetation type is wet-mesic and wet floodplain forest which occur in the floodplain along the Sangamon River.
