Location

The site is approximately 3 miles south of Chandlerville and 5 miles north of Virginia. It is within the West Open Unit of Jim Edgar Panther Creek State Fish and Wildlife Area, located about 6 miles east of the site office.

Description

Panther Creek Hill Prairie Land and Water Reserve consists of a mixture of open uplands and highly dissected forested ravines with high-quality loess hill prairie that supports populations of two state threatened species. There are 10 acres of Grade B loess hill prairie recognized by the Panther Creek Hill Prairie Illinois Natural Areas Inventory site (INAI #0111) surrounded by about 22 acres of degraded, mesic upland timber.

Access

The site is open to the public. To access the site, proceed north approximately 5 miles on Illinois Route 78 from the Route 78/Route 125 junction in Virginia, turn right (east) on Palmerton Road and follow this road (to the southeast and then east) approximately 1 mile to the IDNR parking lot located on the south side of the road.
