Lawrence

Location

The site is 2 miles northeast of Sumner in west-central Lawrence County within the Red Hills State Park.

Description

Red Hills Seep Springs Land and Water Reserve is included on the Red Hills Seep Spring Illinois Natural Areas Inventory (INAI #1320) site. It is situated in an area of steep topography that is characterized by narrow ridges of dry-mesic upland oak-hickory forest and deep ravines with associated seeps. The ridges are forested with white oak, red oak, shagbark hickory, mockernut hickory, white ash, and American elm. The moist soil slopes and lower elevations of the ravines support tulip tree, white oak, and American elm, with black walnut and black gum also present. Christmas fern, wild hydrangea, and spotted touch-me-not species are associated with the seeps. The forest provides nesting habitat for forest interior birds, and both the ravine and seep systems provide habitat for state endangered and threatened species.
