Land and Water Reserve Area

County

Adams

Location

The site is on the border of Adams (west side) and Brown (east side) Counties, 3 miles southeast of Kellerville and 24 miles east of Quincy within the Siloam Springs State Park.

Description

Robert A. Evers contains a significant portion of the McKee Creek Barrens which is recognized by the Illinois Natural Areas Inventory as a high-quality natural area. The reserve is made up of mesic and dry-mesic woodlands with deeply dissected ravines. The woodlands are dominated by white oak and shagbark hickory. McKee Creek runs from the west to east and forms a portion of the southern boundary of the site. A tributary, Siloam Creek, meanders along the western border. The barrens communities are located on the tops of the dry ridges overlooking the creeks, while the seeps are fed by water flowing from the base of these ridgetops. The barrens, woodland, and seep spring communities contain native vegetation representative of the Galesburg Section of the Western Forest-Prairie Natural Division. The site is named in honor of Dr. Robert A. Evers who did much to establish the Illinois Natural Areas Inventory and land protection in Illinois.
