Location

The reserve is situated on glacial till and sandy eolian deposits of the Bloomington Moraine overlooking the broad outwash plain of the Green River Lowlands in Lee County. There are many nearby sites which are protected under INPC programs.

Description

Ryan Wetland and Sand Prairie Land and Water Reserve contains part of the larger 202.3-acre Ryan Wetland and Sand Prairie Illinois Natural Areas Inventory (INAI #1681) site. Moderate to high-quality dry sand prairie, mesic sand prairie, sedge meadow, and sand pond habitats are present. The natural communities at the site exhibit a diverse native flora. Over 150 native species have been recorded since an initial inventory was conducted in 2002. The site also provides important habitat for a variety of wildlife, including two state threatened species. The sand ponds and wetlands support a healthy population of amphibians, and over 50 bird species have been identified.
