Location
The site is located about 5 miles north of the City of Monticello in Piatt County. It is about 2 miles northeast of Lodge Park County Forest Preserve, about 5 miles southwest of Sangamon Park, 5 miles northeast of Monticello’s Sangamon River Land and Water Reserve, and 7 miles northeast of Robert Allerton Park.
Description
Shady Rest Land and Water Reserve protects an approximately 0.25-mile segment of the Sangamon River. This river is recognized by the Illinois Natural Areas Inventory as a biologically significant stream (INAI #1449) with outstanding aquatic resources. Shady Rest protects bottomland forest and upland forest that contribute to the high natural quality of the river by reducing runoff and sediments entering. The forested corridor essentially functions as a buffer for the river. The natural communities present include second growth floodplain and upland forest. The predominant vegetation type is wet-mesic and wet floodplain forest which occur in the floodplain along the Sangamon River.
