Location

The site is contained within the Fondulac Park District’s Spring Creek Preserve, which is located south of Spring Creek Road about a quarter of a mile east of state route 116 in Fondulac Township.

Description

Spring Creek Land and Water Reserve protects archaeological features, natural habitats, and associated wildlife, including 19 bird species that are sensitive to forest fragmentation. The site occurs along the Illinois River bluffs, which rise abruptly about 150 to 200 feet above the level of the nearby Illinois River. Natural communities include old field, dry-mesic upland forest, mesic upland forest, mesic floodplain forest, wet-mesic floodplain forest, and a high-gradient small stream (i.e., Spring Creek and its tributaries). Mesic upland forest (Grade C and D) is the most common type, occurring on more than half of the site.

The site is open to the public. A small parking area is located just off Spring Creek Road, where the site’s main trail system may be accessed.
