Location
The site is approximately 50 miles south of Chicago and 15 miles east-southeast of Kankakee within the Kankakee Sands Conservation Opportunity Area.
Description
Sweet Fern Savanna is an excellent example of the high-quality sand savannas and unique assemblages of plants and animals found in the Kankakee Sand Ares Section of the Grand Prairie Natural Division of Illinois. Approximately 20 acres of the site is Grade B dry-mesic sand savanna recognized on the Illinois Natural Areas Inventory. There is also dry-mesic sand woodland, dry sand prairie, sand flatwoods, and agricultural fields succeeding to wet-mesic sand prairie on the reserve. The site supports 18 state-listed species and more than 500 plants, 400 insects, and 125 vertebrates.
